Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the program the participants should be able to:

•   Examine the role of older agents (metformin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones) and assess the benefits, side effects and contraindications in the treatment algorithm
•   Analyze the various mechanisms of action, benefits and side effects of newer therapies including oral drugs (DPP4 inhibitors, SGLT2 inhibitors), injectables (GLP1 receptor agonists) and insulins (glargine, detemir, degludec) in the treatment algorithm
•   Review the role of insulin therapy in treating type 1 and 2 diabetics and determine which patients would benefit from insulin pump and glucose sensor devices
•   Examine the state-of-the art technology in insulin pumps and glucose sensors, and compare their efficacy to multiple dose injections
•   Identify the risk factors behind cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes and select appropriate screening tests and pharmacologic agents for diagnosis and management
•   Evaluate the symptoms and therapeutic criteria for cardiovascular disease in the diabetic patient and determine whether patient should be referred to a cardiology specialist
•   Identify signs and symptoms of transplant-induced diabetes, LADA and MODY, and select appropriate treatment therapies to reduce complications and avoid serious side effects
•   Instruct patients undergoing intensive insulin therapy on the importance of glucose control including carbohydrate counting, managing mealtime insulin and administering bolus insulin
•   Assess their individual practices in light of the information and discussions during the course, and identify specific strategies to implement as part of a continuing improvement process for their practices
